Group hopes barbershop symposiums help youth

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A group of men is holding monthly barbershop symposiums to help guide Jacksonville's youth.

Derris Epkins hopes to reach the young male community and influence them to make positive decisions in their lives.

Epkins said that often times, these teens do not have an outlet to discuss the issues that affect them specifically.

The “free game” forum, open to all males over the age of 12, is a panel discussion that gives the young men a safe and confidential space to talk.

The participants were also assigned mentors to help them between forums.

The next meeting will be in July at a location yet to be determined and will focus on entrepreneurship, college and career.
