PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - The Players Championship made a big announcement Tuesday night near the famous 17th hole of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.
Through efforts, and the support of the tournament both by patrons and sponsors, The Players tournament raised more $8.7 million for local charities.
"Tonight's the night where we all get to celebrate and really see the impact of this tournament," said Jared Rice, executive director of The Players. "It does a lot for businesses, the profile the community and people have a great time. And then to be able to impact local charities to the tune of $8.7 million? That's life changing."
The money will distributed among 300 charitable organizations in Northeast Florida.
"It means we're going to connect an impact with so many people in Jacksonville and Northeast Florida. We can spread that amount of money across so many needy organizations," said Kevin English, the Tournament Chairman for 2017, who led the volunteers and fundraisers.
"That's what it means to us -- a broad impact on a great community."
The $8.7 million raised for charity this year exceeds last year's total of $8.5 million.
Since 1977, The Players has raised $92 million for charitable causes.
