University Christian wins 8th state title
ORLANDO, Fla. – University Christian overwhelmed Cambridge Christian 61-16 Friday afternoon to win the FHSAA Class 2A football championship.
Head coach David Penland says it reminded him of the 2012 state championship game.
"It was 2012 all over again," Penland said. "Hussein (Howe) caused the fumble and scored the first touchdown. He scored the first time his freshman year and the first time his senior year. I love that kid."
Howe powered the Christians offense scoring with five rushing touchdowns. The Christians defense forced four first half turnovers as University Christian led 35-10 at half. He gave all the credit to hard work and his offensive line.
"We won the game in the trenches," Howe said. "Offensive line played great, they played tremendous. They got it done for us. We've been working since January and we came out and executed and got the job done."
In the second half the Christians stretched the lead to 48-10 forcing a running clock for the last 18 minutes of the game.
It's the eighth state championship for University Christian tying them for second all-time behind Bolles 11 state titles.
The Christians finished the year 11-3.
