Adeyeye leads JU past Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Josh Adeyeye had a career night against FGCU, scoring 35 points and leading the men's basketball team of Jacksonville University to a conference win on the road and a tie for second place in the Atlantic Sun.

JU opened the second half with huge threes from Adeyeye and White, increasing its lead to double digits at the first media timeout. But FGCU refused to go away, outscoring JU 10-3 over the next three minutes, closing the gap to 45-42 with 12:47 left. Adeyeye responded again, scoring nine of the Dolphins' next 11 points, and Jacksonville's defense locked in as well, limiting the Eagles to 1-7 shooting over the next 2:53. With 8:39 to play, JU lead 57-47. The lead got as high as 17 with 3:24 remaining. The Eagles found their range from deep over the final three minutes, getting as close as seven with just nine seconds remaining. But the Dolphins proved to be too much, winning by nine.

Adeyeye's 35 points on 6-10 shooting from deep were a game high. He also had eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Kori Babineaux had 21 points, six assists, five rebounds, and two steals in 40 minutes. White had eight points and seven boards, Clayton had six points and five boards, and J.R. Holder had four points and three boards.

The Dolphins got out to a great start, winning the tip and scoring on the first possession with a layup by Adeyeye. Jacksonville kept up the pace through the first five minutes, making 5 of its 11 shots to jump out to a 12-5 lead at the first media stoppage. Out of the timeout the Dolphins struggled a bit offensively, not scoring for the next 3:47 and allowing FGCU to pull within two, 15-13 at the second media timeout. But an Adeyeye layup got the Dolphins back in rhythm, and Jacksonville increased its lead to 19-14 by the third media timeout. The lead increased to seven, 28-21, on a three-pointer by White, and swelled to nine points, 36-27, at the half.

The Dolphins close out the month of January with a home game against Stetson on Saturday. Jacksonville will also host FGCU on Monday, February 1 before heading back out on the road.
