Florida's Egbunu uncertain to play against UNF
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida could be without center John Egbunu against North Florida in the National Invitational Tournament. The Gators will face the Osprey’s on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. at the UNF Arena.
Coach Mike White said Monday it's unclear whether Egbunu will even travel with the Gators (19-14) to nearby Jacksonville for their first-round game.
Egbunu tore a ligament in his right thumb during practice last week. The 6-foot-11 sophomore played both games in the Southeastern Conference Tournament, averaging 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds.
White says Egbunu is uncertain to play against North Florida and that "there's talk about surgery here in the very near future."
UNF has struggled against big-men all season long. Of their top eight players, Beau Beech is the tallest at 6-foot-9. Demarcus Daniels and Chris Davenport are both 6’8” and are usually tasked with guarding the big man on opposing teams.
Egbunu is averaging 11.4 points and 6.4 rebounds this season. He has five double-doubles and has been Florida's most consistent post scorer.
