Maya DiRado swims in 400-meter individual medley finals

Earns silver in first Olympics

(LAKANA) – American swimmer Maya DiRado won the silver medal in the women's 400-meter individual medley at the Rio Olympics on Saturday night, losing to Katinka Hosszu of  Hungary who set the world record with a time of 04:26.36.

DiRado, a 23-year-old Northern California native, finished with a time of 04:31.15 in her first Olympic Games.

It will also be the last Olympics for DiRado, unless the Stanford graduate changes her mind. She plans to retire after she's done competing in Rio and begin work as a business analyst for a management consulting firm in Atlanta.

Before then, she'll swim in two more events in Rio, the 200-meter individual medley on Monday and Tuesday and the 200-meter backstroke on Thursday and Friday. Like Saturday's event, she'll be America's top seed in those two events as well.

Mireia Belmonte of Spain finished behind DiRado for the bronze medal.

American swimmer Chase Kalisz also won silver in the men's 400-meter individual medley Saturday.
