1st-time Olympian Dressel takes 6th in 100 free

Clay County native has Olympic gold in 4x100 free relay

RIO DE JANEIRO – While Green Cove Springs native Caeleb Dressel came in sixth in his only individual event in Rio de Janeiro, the first-time Olympian had already won a gold medal as the leadoff of the men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay.

Dressel, a Clay High graduate who swam on the Bolles Sharks club team in Jacksonville, finished the men's 100-meter freestyle with a time of 48.02 on Wednesday night.

Canadian swimmer Santo Condorelli, who finished fourth in the event, lists Jacksonville as his hometown and went to high school at Bolles with Ryan Murphy.

Murphy, a Jacksonville native and Dressel's former club swimming teammate, will be aiming for his second Olympic medial after bringing home gold in the men's 100-meter backstroke Monday night.

Murphy, finished the semifinals in the men's 200-meter backstroke Wednesday night with a time of 1:55.15. Murphy is seeded fourth going into the finals, behind fellow American Jacob Pebley.
