Miller dove over the finish line to beat off a challenge from Felix, who had closed in on her.

Miller had a time of 49.44. Felix had a time of 49.51 for the silver medal. Shericka Jackson of Jamaica finished third for the bronze.

After posting the sixth-fastest time in Saturday's prelims, Felix had the fastest time in Sunday's semis. Francis, who was fastest overall on Saturday, was the fastest in her semifinal heat, but only the third-fastest overall Sunday.

The 2015 world champion at 400m, Felix is competing at the distance for the first time at the Olympics. However, she can lay claim to two Olympic 4x400m gold medals from 2012 and 2008 to go with a bunch of other hardware that includes four other Olympic medals, three world championships and six nationally in the 200m, and three national titles in the 400m.

The 30-year-old Los Angeles native was also hoping to defend her 2012 Olympic 200m title in Rio, but missed a spot in that event by 0.01 seconds at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
