The American team of LaShawn Merritt,Tony McQuay, Gil Roberts and Arman Hall posted the fastest time of 2:57.30 to edge out silver medalists Jamaica.

Bahamas took bronze.

The Bahamas beat the Americans in a shocking upset at the 2012 Olympics after the U.S. had won the event in Beijing and Athens. Bouncing back from disappointment in London, the U.S. has since won back-to-back world titles, setting themselves up as event favorites in Rio.

In fact, the U.S. has more or less owned the 4x400m at the Olympics, winning it 16 of 23 times coming into the Rio Games. That includes two stretches of four consecutive golds (1984-1996 and 1956-68) and one stretch of three straight (1924-32).
