Stanton girls soccer falls short in 3A state championship

The Blue Devils lost to Merritt Island 4-2 in penalty kicks Friday.

DELAND, Fla. – Despite outstanding goalkeeping from the Blue Devils Lauryn Ann Harold, the Stanton Blue Devils came up short of winning the class 3A girls soccer state title, falling 4-2 in penalty kicks to Merritt Island.

The senior keeper Harold made eight saves in regulation and both overtime periods for Stanton, but back to back misses in the penalty kick tiebreaker sealed the win for the Mustangs, who also won the 3A state title in 2010.

The Blue Devils almost broke through with a goal late in the 2nd half when Merritt Island's Madeline Miller cleared a shot from Stanton's Madelyn Debski from close range to keep the game scoreless.

Stanton finishes the season with a 17-6-3 record.
