Smoke Laval out as UNF head baseball coach

Laval had a 237-160 record in seven seasons with the Ospreys


JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Smoke Laval has been relieved of his duties as the University of North Florida head baseball coach according to a statement by the school on Wednesday afternoon.

Laval had a record of 237-160 in seven seasons as the Ospreys head coach, including a 33-24 record this past season where they finished second in the Atlantic Sun.

Prior to coming to North Florida, Laval was an assistant and head coach for Louisiana State for 10 years, leading the Tigers to the College World Series in both 2003 and 2004.  After his stint at LSU, Laval was a scout for the Toronto Blue Jays until 2010 when he took the UNF head coaching job.

The Ospreys won 40+ games twice under Laval, including 45 in 2015.

Laval began his coaching career as an assistant at JU in 1977.

According to the school, the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
