Anglers battle waves, rain and kingfish

47.55 pound king leads the way

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - John Zellner and captain Steven Elliott battled the seas and the kingfish on day one of the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament. Their efforts paid off with a 47.55 pound kingfish.

Aboard Home Team Sakana, Zellner and Elliott caught the big king just before the afternoon storms hit. Zellner described the day, "Coming in we put the bow of the boat right into the waves. The next thing you know the lines goes off. We cleaned up everything and got him in. Storms started coming down on us, five foot waves, it was anything you could think about and it was crazy."

Only one other boat weighed a fish over 40 pounds. 96 boats weighed fish out of 272 registered boats. Day two begins at 6:00 a.m. Friday with weigh-in scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. at Sisters Creek Marina.
