SAN JOSE, Calif. - The No. 12 Oregon Ducks upset the No. 5 Wisconsin Badgers 72-54 Friday in a first-round South Region game in San Jose, California.
Unlike most 12th-seeded teams in the NCAA Tournament, the Ducks came into the game hot, having won eight straight games, including taking the Pac-12 tournament title.
After a run of five straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, Oregon missed out last season. That was a disappointing result after reaching the Elite Eight in 2016 and the Final Four in 2017.
The Ducks (24-12) will next face No. 5 Wisconsin/No. 12 Oregon in the second round. The Badgers, meanwhile, head home early after sitting out their first tournament in 20 years last year.
The last few years of that run included back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 2016 and 2017 following a Final Four appearance in 2014 and a national championship loss to Duke in 2015.
Wisconsin, which finished fourth in the Big Ten regular-season standings this season before losing to Michigan State in the conference semifinals, finish the season with an overall record of 23-11.
