UK toughens up borders over Brazil virus variant fears
The U.K. is ramping up its mass vaccination program as the government seeks to protect the countrys oldest and most vulnerable residents before easing a third national lockdown. Under the travel corridor arrangements, anyone arriving in the U.K. from countries deemed safe was exempt from a period of quarantine. Though the decision was widely welcomed, including by lobby group Airlines U.K., Johnson was also accused again of tardy decision-making. Ski resorts struggle to hire amid Trump's student visa ban
But Sotelo said there are plenty of jobs to go around, especially at and near ski resorts. Many industry leaders agree, saying that even with Trumpโs order in place, itโs difficult to fill seasonal jobs with domestic workers. Another 1,000 to 2,000 workers come to U.S. resorts on H-2B visas, which are also barred by Trump's order. Huskey started recruiting foreign workers on J-1 visas in the mid-1990s after an improving economy made it harder to attract Americans. The NSAA and ski resorts across the country were keeping a close eye on two federal lawsuits challenging Trumpโs order โ one in Washington D.C. and the other in the Northern District of California.
Program allows some Alaska Native Vietnam vets to get land
Stewy would be an Alaska Native leader today if he had hadnt been killed in a head-on collision while driving the Maserati in 1975, his brother said. Alaska Natives were allowed to apply for 160 acres (65 hectares) of land under the 1906 Alaska Native Allotment Act. The BLM and other federal partners have identified about 1,000 Alaska Native service members or their descendants who might be eligible for the program and is in the process of notifying them. There could be more since the BLM estimates 40% of the Alaska Native veterans or their surviving family members have moved out of Alaska and may not know the window will reopen to apply. Even if they cant get that preferred land, Carlo cant imagine trying to sell it back for cash to the government.
5 Iran tankers sailing to Venezuela amid US pressure tactics
Given the crushing U.S. sanctions imposed on Iran, also-sanctioned Venezuela appears to be the country that would have nothing to lose from accepting the shipments. Raja said Refinitiv had no data on any Iranian gasoline shipment ever going to South America before. Iran and Venezuela are two independent nations that have had trade with each other and they will in the future. Rob Lodewick, a Pentagon spokesman, declined to comment on the Iranian vessels. ___Associated Press writers Nasser Karimi and Amir Vahdat in Tehran, Iran, and Joshua Goodman in Miami contributed to this report.
America is now the world's top oil producer, but cracks are emerging
MIDLAND, Texas - By any measure, America's rapid expansion to a record 12 million barrels of oil output a day has been a global game-changer. The US still imports about nine million barrels a day of oil, but it is far less dependent on foreign supplies. At the Sabine Pass on the border of Texas and Louisiana sits Cheniere Energy's shiny new liquid natural gas terminal. Cheniere now exports liquid natural gas to more than 30 countries in Asia, Europe and South America. Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the amount of debt faced by some shale producers.
NASA says humans drying out Amazon, increasing threat of fires
PASADENA, Calif. - A newly-released NASA study has found the atmosphere over the Amazon rainforest in South America has been drying out over the past 20 years and that human activity is the primary cause. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of Amazon fires this year. The trees pull water from the ground to cool themselves during photosynthesis and release water vapor into the atmosphere through their leaves, the study said. That water vapor turns into clouds, which return the water to the ground as rain. The Amazon is the world's largest rainforest and covers 40% of South America, according to the World Wildlife Fund.

Satellite captures powerful hurricane and solar eclipse at same time
"Not too often you catch a Category 4 hurricane and a solar eclipse occurring in the same satellite loop," the National Weather Service tweeted with a clip of video. The National Hurricane Center issued an advisory on Hurricane Barbara, which is more than 1,000 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Simultaneously, a total solar eclipse was visible across South America. Outside that area, a partial solar eclipse was visible. Thanks to the National Weather Service, we're able to see the two events from a different perspective.
