2 killed in I-95 crash in St. Johns County

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - Two people in a pickup truck were killed in a crash with a RV on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County on Thursday afternoon, according to St. Johns County Fire Rescue and the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened in the northbound lanes near County Road 210 about 3 p.m.

State troopers said the Florida Department of Transportation had the left lane of I-95 closed for work, and traffic was slowing in the area.

That's when a silver pickup truck driven by 61-year-old David Wilkinson, of Danville, Va., slowed down but hit some of the traffic cones, and the truck was rear-ended by a RV, troopers said. They said the truck struck a guardrail and came to a stop in the grass median about 200 feet from where it was hit.

Wilkinson and passenger Mary Shaffer, 61, of Bristol, Tenn., were killed in the crash.

Two people in the RV -- Wayne Robbins, 75, and Cynthia Robbins, 63, of Scituate, Mass. -- were not hurt.

Troopers were interviewing witnesses and investigating the crash.

Traffic was backed up for miles.
