FHP: Woman dies in crash with red-light runner


JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 54-year-old woman was killed in a crash Sunday evening at Normandy Boulevard and Chaffee Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Velvet Griffin was headed south on Chaffee Road about 5 p.m. when she went through the intersection at Normandy Boulevard on a green light. A Ford Explorer, driven by 21-year-old David Mertil, drove through the red light on Normandy Boulevard and t-boned Griffin's Hyundai Accent, according to the FHP report.

Griffin died at the scene. Mertil suffered minor injuries.

Charges are pending.
