1 killed in truck crash on US 301

FHP says box truck rear-ended tractor-trailer

LAWTEY, Fla. – The driver of a box truck died Tuesday afternoon it rear-ended a tractor-trailer that was slowing to make a turn on U.S. 301 near the Clay-Bradford County line, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at 1:34 p.m. on 301 in a construction zone near Richard Mosley Road, north of Lawtey. As of 4 p.m., rescue personnel were still trying to extract the driver from the cab of the box truck.

Troopers said the driver was 44 years old from Hernando, Florida, but didn't release his name pending notification of his family.

 

The driver of the big rig, a Keystone Heights man, was hospitalized with minor injuries at Orange Park Medical Center. 

The first reports to FHP said the box truck caught fire after the crash, but investigators said there was no fire.

One northbound lane of 301 remained closed at 6 p.m.. This article will be updated as more information becomes available.
