JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 71-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash Tuesday afternoon on Beach Boulevard at Forest Boulevard, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

A car was traveling west on Beach Boulevard about 1 p.m. when the driver attempted to turn left at the intersection and entered the path of the motorcyclist who was eastbound in the middle lane of Beach Boulevard, police said.

Higinio Gonzalez was thrown from the motorcycle and was taken to UF Health Jacksonville, where he died.

Police said Gonzalez was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which shut down the eastbound lanes of Beach Boulevard for several hours.

Gonzalez’s family told News4Jax that he served in the military and loved to ride motorcycles.

“He done something that made him happy,” Gonzalez’s bother, Luis Gonzalez said. “It made him happy to feel the wind in his face and be free on the road. Unfortunately, there was a bad accident but that's the way life is.”

The investigation is ongoing, according to the Sheriff's Office.
