Woman killed crossing Atlantic Boulevard

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A homeless woman was killed Wednesday night in a crash on Atlantic Boulevard, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said the woman was crossing Atlantic Boulevard north at Century 21 Drive at 9:30 p.m. when a car struck her. The driver of that car remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation.

Witnesses told News4Jax multiple vehicles struck the woman, however, officers at the scene said they were still working to confirm that information.

A friend of the woman hit said she's in shock and can't believe it happened.

"She was so sweet. She was a very sweet girl. I do know, she did believe in Jesus. So that's a good thing- especially now," said Holly Smith. She has been in contact with the woman's boyfriend and said he was understandably very upset.

Police have not released the name of the woman.

Officers said they were looking for surveillance video at nearby businesses that could have caught the accident on camera.

All lanes of Atlantic Boulevard at Century 21 Drive were shut down while the police were investigating.

News4Jax covered a fatal crash at the same intersection on Sept. 2, 2015.
