JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two Hilliard women died and two other people were injured Saturday afternoon when a car that ran a red light was struck by an SUV at the intersection of West Moncrief and New Kings roads, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.
Officials said the car going north on New Kings Road drove through a red light trying to turn onto West Moncrief Road and was hit by the SUV, police said. The impact forced the SUV to overturn and crash into a traffic pole and knocking out a traffic control box.
The driver of the SUV, 51-year-old Elaine Prestigiacomo and front-seat passenger, 74-year-old Zelda Eckstein, died at the scene, police said.
A back-seat passenger in the SUV and the driver of the car were hospitalized, both with critical injuries.
JSO traffic homicide detectives continue to investigate the crash that caused the city's fourth and fifth auto fatalities of the year.
The Sheriff's Office said the traffic light at the intersection of New Kings and West Moncrief roads will be out until at least Sunday. The intersection will be manned by the JSO until fixed.
