Man hit by SUV after stealing beer, says JSO

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after police say he was hit by a car, Sunday night.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, officers were called to the intersection of East State Street and North Newnan Street around 7:52 p.m. where a man was hit by a car after running into the street.

Multiple witnesses were also on scene and were interviewed by investigators. According to JSO, some of the witnesses on scene said the man had just stolen beer from the Family Dollar located nearby and he, along with another person, were fleeing the area when the he ran into the street and was struck by the vehicle.

Given the severity of the injuries, traffic homicide investigators were also notified and responded to the scene.

The man was taken to UF Health where he is in life-threatening condition. His friend was taken into custody and charged with petit theft.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
