2 children critically injured, pregnant mom hurt in hit-and-run crash

Jacksonville police say driver who caused crash ran from scene

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two young children and their pregnant mother were critically injured a vehicle crash midday Thursday on the Westside, and police said the driver who caused the crash ran from the scene.

Police and rescue personnel were called just before 1 p.m. to Alpha Avenue and Alta Vista Street, off Cassatt Avenue. The driver, a woman who was nine months pregnant, and her 2- and 3-year-old children were all hospitalized at UF Heath Jacksonville.

Police said one of the children was ejected in the crash. A Jacksonville Fire-Rescue spokesman said the two children had life-threatening injuries.

Police said a red Dodge Durango ran a stop sign and crashed into a Kia Sorrento, causing it to overturn. The driver, described as a thin white man, about 6 feet 2 inches tall wearing a red baseball cap, a black tank top and red shorts, ran after the crash. A woman who was in the same vehicle remained at the scene, but police said she is not cooperating with the investigation.

Police are looking into how fast the Durago was traveling at the time and checked to see if it was stolen.
