FHP: 1 dead in chain-reaction crash on I-295

Northbound lanes near Beach Boulevard blocked for 3 hours

A 21-year-old Jacksonville man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 295 northbound just south of Beach Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Matthew Joseph was headed north on I-295 in his 2003 Ford Mustang and slowed for traffic ahead of him. But the driver of a Dodge Charger behind Joseph didn't stop and rear-ended Joseph's Mustang, sending it into the back of the car ahead of him and causing a chain-reaction crash that involved seven vehicles.

Troopers said none of the other drivers were injured, including the 27-year-old driver of the Charger.

According to the crash report, charges are pending.

A dark-colored passenger van that was the last of the vehicles to be hit in the chain-reaction crash drove off, troopers said.

Northbound traffic was diverted onto UNF Drive while authorities investigated.
