FHP: Middleburg man, 59, killed in Putnam County crash

Crash involving 2 trucks happened near Grandin Sand Plant on SR 100

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – A 59-year-old Middleburg man was killed in a crash involving two trucks Monday morning in Putnam County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said it happened just before 6 a.m. on State Road 100, outside the Vulcan Materials Company Grandin Sand Plant.

According to the Highway Patrol, a truck was traveling east on S.R. 100 when it collided the left side of the trailer of another truck exiting Grandin Sand Plant.

The impact caused the first truck to rotate and overturn onto its side, troopers said. The driver of that truck, who troopers identified as William Brathwaite, died at the scene.

The driver of the second truck, a 58-year-old Live Oak man, was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville with minor injuries, troopers said.

The Highway Patrol report shows it's unclear whether the drivers were wearing seat belts.

Troopers said they are investigating whether the crash was alcohol-related and the FHP report shows charges are pending.
