Flipped big rig shuts down I-95 south near Bowden Road for hours

JFRD called due to fuel spill; all southbound lanes closed for 3½ hours

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – All southbound lanes of Interstate 95 were closed at Bowden Road for hours on Saturday afternoon after a tractor-trailer overturned during heavy rain.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver lost control of the big rig about 4:50 p.m. when he tried to stop for rapidly slowing traffic. It left and re-entered the travel lanes before flipping on its side.

I-95 south didn't reopen until about 8:20 p.m.

The Miami-based driver, Jose Hernandez, 52, suffered only minor injuries but was cited for careless driving, according to the FHP report.

Troopers called hazmat crews because about 100 gallons of fuel leaked when the rig overturned.
