Teens on spring break pull couple from burning car

Man, woman in critical condition after early morning crash

PALM COAST, Fla. - Two Michigan teenagers became more than just spring breakers early Tuesday morning when they pulled a Palm Coast couple from a burning car after the couple was involved in a single-car crash on Palm Coast Parkway at Linear Park.

Cody Decker and Luke Vaughn, both 17, of Dewitt, Mich., told Flagler County deputies they were at the entrance of Canopy Walk in Palm Coast just before 1 a.m. when they saw a vehicle speeding past them, and seconds later they heard a crash and saw the mangled 2002 Jaguar on fire.

The two teens ran to the scene and saw the driver, Carlos Adams, 42, and his passenger, Tracy Lopez, 44, trapped inside the burning car, deputies said. Within seconds, one of the teens broke the glass on the vehicle and bent the door frame down to remove the couple before emergency crews could get to the scene.

Deputies who arrived first said the vehicle had struck two trees and separated into nearly two pieces, with the engine coming to rest on Palm Coast Parkway. The vehicle itself landed in the median and caught two trees on fire.

The Palm Coast Fire Department extinguished the fires, and the Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Adams and Lopez were taken by Flagler County ambulances to Halifax Medical Center. Both were in critical condition as of noon Tuesday.

Both were wearing seat belts.

Troopers said blood alcohol content results for Adams are pending. They said charges are also pending.

The teens were treated for minor injuries to their hands.

"These actions of these teens may have saved the lives of this couple," said Flagler County Sheriff Donald Fleming. "They stayed calm, acted quickly and removed the victims and themselves from danger. These young men deserve our thanks and recognition."

Fleming will be recognizing the two teens for their actions during a 10 a.m. ceremony Thursday at the Palm Coast VFW on North Old Kings Road in Palm Coast. Palm Coast Fire Chief Mike Beadle will be there on behalf of the city Fire Department.
