Update on the continuing freeze!

Coldest night has passed yet expect a frosty Wednesday sunrise

Beaches will be spared of a frost, but just inland plants need to be protected.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – 5 p.m. UPDATE: A Freeze Warning has been issued for all of our inland counties for Tuesday night. These counties include: Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Columbia, Hamilton, Suwannee and Union counties until 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.  In fact, freeze warnings go all the way into the Panhandle.

Temperatures are once again expected to dive down to the 28 to 32 degree range overnight for a vast chunk of these counties. Temperatures at or below freezing are also expected across many of the Georgia counties as well but freeze advisories are only issued once a year. Once the first big freeze has been observed, freeze warnings are no longer issued for Georgia counties.

Frost advisory for Jacksonville, especially in western Duval county, as temperatures drop tonight but these colder numbers will be limited in coverage in the more rural parts of the county. At this time, metro Jacksonville will flirt with but should avoid reaching freezing overnight, yet frost kills plants.

Plants:  Tender plants need to be covered (if you want to keep them), the exception will be along the beaches and major rivers where temperatures will chill to only around 40°.

Pets:  Outdoor pets will again need an of shelter from the chill

Pipes:  No Worries

Pools:  No Worries

People:  Be careful when using space heaters and fireplaces.

Looks like we will see another inland freeze/frosty start on Thursday morning as well, more later!

6 a.m. UPDATE: It's wicked cold this morning. Temperatures plunged to 27 degrees in Jacksonville with some areas in Georgia a bit colder than that. There are some exceptions however. St. Augustine bottomed out at 49 degrees thanks to a slight onshore wind. As of 6a.m., temperatures stand at 29 in Jax and 52 in St. Augustine.

This time of year the water temps are warmer than the land so any wind coming from the ocean keeps things moderated a bit which is why St. Augustine is so warm.

No holds barred this morning, folks. You'll want to pull out all the coats, sweaters, leg warmers, hand warmers, put on the layers and put on the ear muffs as temperatures are bitting this morning. They'll warm up into the upper 50s this afternoon under sunny skies.

With the new year has come a new weather pattern, one that will bring our second consecutive freeze of the season by Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for all locations and counties. The Freeze Warning is in effect from midnight tonight through 9:00am Tuesday morning. We can expect several hours of freezing and below freezing temperatures.

With widespread frost likely, the three P's will need protecting: plants, pets and people. Some areas in our inland zones (I-75 to Highway 301, along and to the North of I-10) may want to look after the exposed pipes as well as temperatures dive into the mid 20s.

House fires always seem to dominate the news when the weather gets cold and we certainly don't want any tragedies tonight. Remember to follow the directions on space heaters exactly as written and keep them at least 3 feet away from anything that can easily ignite.

Also, please remember your pets and give them a warm place to sleep tonight. They don't have vocal chords to tell you they're cold but if you're cold, they're cold.

Locally, close to the I-95 corridor, expect temperatures tonight to bottom out in the upper 20s to near 30 degrees. Most areas east of I-95 will see temperatures in the low 30s. Live at the beach?

According to data from NOAA, Monday morning's freeze will go down as the latest freeze on record for Jacksonville since 1994 (Jan. 25th), the 10th latest freeze since 1900 and the 12 latest freeze on record.

Expect another freeze for many locations heading into Tuesday night and Wednesday morning before a slight moderation in temperatures by the end of the week. It's going to be a cold few days with highs only topping out in the mid 50s each day.

Finally, winter has arrived. Better late than....well, you know.
