Hot with scattered storms, some severe

More showers and storms expected Thursday afternoon

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Another round of storms is expected this afternoon.  It's hard to say whether these storms will go severe but one thing is for sure: the potential is certainly here.

Looking at this mornings weather balloon information (radiosonde sounding), there is warm air aloft that will act as a cap (inversion) on the heat energy trying to rise. As our afternoon temperature soar, I suspect that cap will break with the help of the sea breeze. Once the cap is broken, much like taking the lid off of a pot of boiling potatoes, the steam rushes up to the ceiling. It works pretty much the same way in the atmosphere.

The biggest threat with these storms will be downburst winds, lightning and brief heavy downpours. The storm motion won't be very fast at all so some areas where the most intense storms do pop, will be capable of dropping an inch or two of rainfall.

The best chance of storms will be between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
