When will the rainy season begin?

Recent dry conditions in North Florida contracted while drought increased in coastal Georgia.

Rainfall dropped off the past couple of weeks leading to dry conditions around North Florida, but areas in Georgia have seen abnormally dry weather get worse.

Glynn County is on the edge of moderate drought but conditions are direr just to the north. A severe drought has been inching closer that covers coastal areas of Georgia up into Savannah.

Those conditions have not been as harsh across North Florida, but only five days have received measurable rain in Jacksonville. One of which brought record rainfall totaling over 2.5 inches in just an hour. That was four times the total rainfall in all of May last year.

Is this the start of the rainy season?

The start dates of the rainy season can vary, but typically the climatological pattern gives way to a pattern of afternoon storms from late May to early June.

Rain relief is on the way leading into the weekend and this could be the start to a wetter setup.

Tropical moisture over the Bahamas will get drawn northward providing a boost in humidity more akin to what we would get in the summer rainy season. This will favor rounds of rain each day beginning Friday and lasting beyond the weekend through next week.
