Tornado watch in parts of Georgia
GEORGIA – A Weather Authority Alert Day has been issued for Southeast Georgia until 1 p.m.
There are also tornado warnings in place for some areas, including Thomasville, because storms there are strong enough to potentially produce tornadoes. Meanwhile, Valdosta is under a severe thunderstorm warning.
Right now, these watches and warnings are outside the viewing area for North Florida. But if those storms shift south or intensify, I’ll be tracking them closely, so you can trust The Weather Authority to keep you informed.
If you spot any significant weather where you are, feel free to share your photos and videos safely through SnapJAX—I’d love to see what your neighborhood is experiencing.
Cold front sparks severe weather
What’s driving all this action? It’s a powerful cold front moving through, and it’s really stirring things up across inland southeast Georgia.
Blackshear, Waycross, Brunswick, and Darien are specifically in the zone for storms expected to turn severe through about 9 a.m. (based on current guidance). The main threats look like heavy rain, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and some small hail—all things you want to keep an eye on as the day goes on.
For North Florida, I can confirm we’re dry for now. Temperatures are in the 60s and 70s, and the storms haven’t arrived yet. I expect rain and possible storms to move in later—especially after 1 p.m. If you have plans outdoors, like heading out to Sawgrass for tee time, you’ll want to keep the umbrella handy!
Drought and rainfall deficit continue
I wish I had better news about the drought—we’re still in “extreme” territory around here, and the rainfall deficit is showing up big-time on our Exact Track 4D graphics. Some spots are falling way behind for the season.
We really need this round of rain to make even a small dent in those deficit numbers. Every little bit helps, so fingers crossed the storms bring some much-needed relief (but not too much, too fast).
Today’s forecast and looking ahead
Staying local? Expect showers and thunderstorms to roll in this afternoon, with a high near 82 degrees and winds out of the west-southwest around 11 mph. It’s a good idea to stay weather-aware all day long—check in with News4JAX and The Weather Authority for the latest Exact Track 4D radar updates.
