Officials to tour Punta Gorda 10 years after storm

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will visit a southwest Florida community Wednesday, the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Charley.

Hurricane Charley was a Category 4 storm when it slammed into the coast on Aug. 13, 2004 near Cayo Costa, just north of Captiva. It was the strongest storm to hit the state since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. In Charlotte County, Charley did $3.2 billion in damage. Fourteen deaths in the county were blamed on the storm.

Putnam and Bush are scheduled to meet with emergency management officials in Punta Gorda and the Enterprise Charlotte County Economic Council about recovery effort.

Putnam and Bush toured the area in the hurricane's aftermath, along with then-President George W. Bush.
