JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sunday began with sunny skies and rapidly warming temperatures. Clouds begin to build around the noon hour. Temperatures climbed through the 80s, hitting the mid 90s for an afternoon high- prompting afternoon storms to fire up.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms move in from the Gulf from the mid day hours into the early afternoon, and sweep from the west-southwest to the east. The storms peak in intensity and coverage between 4:00 and 6:00pm. Area rainfall totals on average will be around .25" with one or two isolated locations receiving over an inch. Areas from Gainesville to Palatka to St Augustine will see the most frequent showers and the most intense storms.
A late afternoon thunderstorm pushed through the metro area around 6:00, bringing downpours, thunder, and lightning. The storm pushed offshore by sunset.
The showers will move offshore after sunset and will fade significantly. Expect a quiet, cloudy evening with gradual clearing.
