FDOT plans $13 million project for State/Union streets

A pair of downtown's most dangerous streets are about to get a makeover. FDOT is planning to spend $13 million resurfacing and improving State Street, Union Street and the Mathews Bridge Expressway.

Scheduled to begin in December. The project includes resurfacing four miles of roadway from the western end of the Mathews Bridge to Cleveland Street at Kings Road, just west of the I-95 overpass. The project also includes sidewalk repair/replacement, ramp upgrades, drainage improvements and resurfacing Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway (Gator Bowl Boulevard interchange) from Grant Street to Church Street. In addition, Main Street between State and Union streets will be converted from a one-way to a two-way street.

Hubbard Construction Company of Winter Park is the contractor. The project is expected to be complete in spring 2017. Various daytime and nighttime lane closures on Union Street, State Street and the Mathews/Arlington Expressway, as well as sidewalk closures with detours, will be in effect during the duration of the project.
