JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – If you're looking for a tennis coach, a swim instructor, or just something fun for the kids to do while they're on spring or summer break, the YMCA is making it easy for you.
Hundreds of families got to explore programs offered by local nonprofits Thursday at the Williams Family YMCA in Mandarin.
City leaders, local nonprofits, and the YMCA all came out to give local kids the ultimate Spring Break Bash.
Dozens of child advocacy groups filled the gym with games, arts and crafts, bounce houses and so much more. Parents got the chance to access all the resources offered in Northeast Florida to help make a positive impact on kids.
Local leaders said keeping kids busy over the break can be crucial to preventing them from heading down the wrong path.
“Idle time is the devil's workshop, so what we want to do is get to that person ahead of time, help give them structure with leaders that care about them and can keep them safe, so they won't have to go to another alternative,” said Eric Mann, president and CEO of YMCA Florida First Coast.
Mayor Lenny Curry said the programs offer a chance to raise kids' spirits.
“(It's) us reaching out to at-risk youth, showing them a better way, showing there's opportunity and hope for them,” Curry said.
City Councilman Tommy Hazouri said the programs aren't just for at-risk youth.
“Pick the program that best suits your child to help them move forward,” he said. “Whether they're at-risk or not, this program is for everybody.
Autumn, 10, said without the programs she would just end up babysitting her little sister.
“She cries a lot, so it's kind of boring,” Autumn said.
