Duval County teaching others about parent academy

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Duval County Public Schools leaders are spending two days teaching other Florida districts about their successful parent academy that's served more than 15,000 parents in Jacksonville.

The parent academy gives parents the opportunity to learn how get more involved in how their students are doing in school, as well as ways to get their families involved in the district and the community.

School leaders from Alachua, Orange, Volusia, Broward, Leon, Clay and Hernando counties will be learning from Duval leaders Wednesday and Thursday about the parent academy to help other districts create and establish their own.

The courses for parents vary from how to find scholarships to how to understand Florida standards tests -- and they take place at schools, churches and libraries across the county.
