Florida student assessment scores released

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Education released student performance results on state assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Civics and U.S. History.

“Today’s results show that our focus on improved student learning is working, and I commend our state’s students, educators, parents and school administrators for their hard work throughout the 2015-16 school year,” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “Even with a higher bar, Florida students continued the overall trend of increased performance year over year.”

Statewide, results show that the percentage of students achieving on mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) increased overall by one percentage point, with 58 percent of students in grades 3-5 and 56 percent of students in grades 6-8 scoring Level 3 or higher.

Results were up 5 percentage points for students younger than high school age taking Algebra with 88 percent scoring Level 3 or higher in 2016.

The percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher on the Algebra 2 end-of-course assessment increased by four percentage points while English Language Arts remained steady. 

Student results were up 1 percentage point in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science Assessment and Biology 1).


Highlights from the Northeast Florida area include:

Alachua County

  • Improved by three percentage points to 88 percent of students younger than high school age earning Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1.
  • Increased the percentage of students achieving in Civics to 70 percent, an improvement of three percentage points.

Baker County

  • Increased the percentage of students achieving in Geometry by 16 percentage points, up to 66 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved performance in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) by nine percentage points, with 63 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher
  • Improved in U.S. History by nine percentage points.

Bradford County

  • Improved by 15 percentage points for students younger than high school age earning Level 3 in Algebra 1.
  • Increased by nine percentage points in Biology 1.
  • Increased eight percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments)
  • Improved seven percentage points in both Grade 5 Science and in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment) by five percentage points.

Clay County

  • Moved up by five percentage points the percent of students achieving in Level 3 or higher in Algebra 2.
  • Improved on the Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment) by four percentage points.
  • Increased performance in Civics by three percentage points.

Columbia County

  • Jumped 15 percentage points the percent of students earning Level 3 or higher in Biology 1.
  • Increased performance in Civics by three percentage points.
  • Improved both Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of Course assessments) and Grades 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology 1 End-of Course assessment) by two percentage points.

Duval County

  • Increased performance in Biology 1 by 13 percentage points, with 72 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved 11 percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, and moved up eight percentage points for students of high school age in Algebra 1.
  • Increased U.S. History by three percentage points to 62 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.

Flagler County

  • Moved up seven percentage points in Algebra 2, with 54 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved five percentage points in Geometry, with 62 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased one percentage point in Grades 9-10 English Language Arts, Civics, and Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology 1 End-of Course assessment).

Hamilton County

  • Improved by 13 percentage points in the percent of students earning Level 3 or higher in Civics.
  • Moved up six percentage points in Biology 1.
  • Increased by three percentage points in both U.S. History and Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of Course assessments).

Nassau County

  • Increased by 17 percentage points the percent students younger than high school age earning Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1 to 84 percent.
  • Improved performance in Algebra 2 by 15 percentage points.
  • Increased five percentage points in Geometry.

Putnam County

  • Improved the percentage of students younger than high school age earning Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1 by ten percentage points.
  • Increased student performance in Grades 3-5 English Language Arts by three percentage points.
  • Moved the percent of students earning Level 3 or higher in Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology Ed-of-Course assessment) by one percentage point.

St. Johns County

  • Increased performance in Civics by three percentage points, with 91 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • The percent of students younger than high school age earning Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1 increased two percentage points to 98 percent.
  • Improved one percentage point in both Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8 English Language Arts.

School for the Deaf and for the Blind

  • Improved the percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher in Civics by 14 percentage points.
  • Increased by four percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology End-of-Course assessment).
  • Improved by three percentage points in both Grades 3-5 and Grades 9-10 English Language Arts.

Suwannee County

  • Increased by seven percentage points for students younger than high school age earning Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1.
  • Improved student performance in Civics by six percentage points.
  • Increased both Grades 3-5 English Language Arts and Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) one percentage point.

Union County

  • Improved the percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher in Algebra 2 by 23 percentage points, by 19 percentage points in Geometry, and 18 percentage points in U.S. History.
  • Increased in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) by eight percentage points
  • Moved up by eight percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment).
