Phillips has taught math and science at Chets Creek for 16 years. In her time as educator, she has consulted schools both locally and nationally, conducted meetings of the math council and helped write the district's math assessments.

Phillips says this honor is "humbling and fulfilling." Duval County Schools superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti says "this recognition does more than just affirm Ms. Phillips' impact on her students, school and the district."

Phillips, and the other award-winners, will receive their prize during a special ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 8. The winners will also get a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

She is the second Chets Creek educator to receive the award. Phillips is also a National Board Certified Teacher and was the teacher of the year at her school in 2001.
