UF Health received the award in a ceremony Thursday for the hospital's success with proton therapy.

A Jacksonville Beach man who was treated with proton therapy talked about the positive atmosphere he experienced while getting treated for prostate cancer.

"The beauty of it is it doesn't damage the other organs around like the other forms of radiation and other treatments do," Steve Scarborough said.

Scarborough was the 3,575th patient to be treated at UF's proton therapy facility.

"What makes the Proton Therapy Institute excellent is it has patient-centered, coordinated care that's state-of-the-art and informed by research," State Surgeon General John Armstrong. "It represents part of a system of care to ensure Floridians receive the best care possible for cure and that enriches the lives of Florida families."
