GREEN COVE SPRING, Fla. – The Clay County Sheriff's Office is searching for 22-year-old Ozell McNabb Jr., who is a suspect in the Sunday morning shooting death of 18-year-old Kolton Shearer.
Deputies searched for McNabb in the area of Pacetti Road, south of Green Cove Springs, and stretching toward the Putnam County border.
The CCSO confirmed that three people were arrested in the robbery and shooting that happened early Sunday morning on U.S. 16. They've been identified as Jordan Tyler Coleman, 20, Taurean Johnson, 28, and Alexandra Schreffler, 21.
Robbery/homicide Sgt. Domenic Paniccia told News4Jax that Shearer was taken to Orange Park Medical Center for a gunshot wound suffered during what officials called a robbery.
Shots were fired at a house on County Road 16A near Idlewild Avenue around 2 a.m., deputies said.
After being shot, Shearer drove a pickup truck to a nearby Kangaroo gas station for help. An unharmed passenger riding in the backseat tried to save Shearer by giving him CPR in the gas station parking lot, deputies said.
A wounded passenger, riding in the front seat, was shot in the leg and will undergo surgery Monday, deputies said.
Shearer died at the gas station from his injuries, according to deputies.
An alert to residents of the search area was sent out via phone message by Clay County Emergency Management.
Suspect's best friend speaks about man's disappearance
Louise Byrd said she’s known McNabb for eight years, and it’s hard to believe he’s linked to a murder.
“He tried to call me last night, but I didn’t answer," Byrd said. “That’s my best friend. (I) love him death. I just hope this ends soon.”
The missed call is the last time she’s heard from him.
“I understand Kolton’s family is suffering, and like, I’m sorry for their loss, but can the suffering please stop?" Byrd said. "Just turn yourself in. That’s all I want [McNabb] to do.”
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is asking for everyone to be on the lookout for McNabb and to call 911 with any information about his location.
