Man, 72, shot by Columbia County deputy

LAKE CITY, Fla. – A 72-year-old man was shot by a Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputy Tuesday morning after deputies say the man drove his car at the deputy and two citizens.

Charles Schoener was sitting in his vehicle about 10:30 a.m. at 4204 SW Pinemount Road when he was approached by Cpl. Randy Harrison and Deputy Gary Cole because of a dispute between Schoener and some of his tenants.

The deputies said as they approached, Schoener started the vehicle and accelerated rapidly toward them and the citizens who were standing in the yard.

Harrison fired his service pistol, striking Schoener in the upper torso, deputies said.

Schoener was flown to a Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where he was in stable condition. No deputies or other citizens were injured in the confrontation, deputies said.

While the shooting is under investigation by the Sheriff's Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney's Office, Harrison will be on administrative leave.

Harrison is a 17-year veteran of the police force and Cole is a 9-year veteran.
