3 people shot in 24 hours on Westside

2 homes were also hit by gunfire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 17-year-old male was shot on the Westside Tuesday evening.  It's the third incident of gunfire in that particular area in 24 hours.

The teenager arrived at UF Health shortly before 9 p.m. with a non life-threatening gunshot wound.  He said he was shot on Bradford Street, which isn't far from Commonwealth Avenue and McDuff Avenue.

"He was unsure who was shooting at him," said Lt. John Gay with JSO.

When officers arrived, they found an occupied home in the area was also hit by gunfire.

The Violent Crimes Task Force and JSO were investigating this case and a couple others in this area over the past 24 hours.

"We've had several incidents over here.  We had a shooting into an unoccupied dwelling and an aggravated battery yesterday.  All those will be investigated by the Violent Crimes Task Force," said Lt. Gay.

Monday night two people were shot while walking at the intersection of Kingston Street and Division Street.  They sustained non life-threatening injuries.

Tuesday night shots were also fired into an empty home on Kingston Street.

News4Jax Crime Analyst Gil Smith said a problem police run into is people in the area simply not talking to them.

That's the most difficult part-- people not cooperating and that's the most difficult thing for the community to understand is that these types of things will continue to happen as long as people aren't talking because criminals know people aren't going to talk," Smith said. "When they know people will talk and can always remain anonymous they're not going to know who they are then you notice these things start to decrease in those communities."

Anyone with information about these shootings is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
