Airports back in business after blizzard

Around 600 canceled flights nationwide Wednesday, compared to about 5,000 Tuesday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As the sun rises this morning, millions of people living in the Northeast will begin digging their homes and cars out of the leftovers of this week's blizzard.

Today, many more planes are expected to leave airports that were shut down from the snow, which means less cancellations at Jacksonville International Airport.

According to FlightAware, more than 600 flights nationwide are expected to be cancelled today, compared with just under 5,000 cancellations yesterday.

Pilot Matt Bannon said he knows the drill when it comes to bad weather.

"I've been stranded at a lot of places, but when dispatchers book flights, there's criteria and if they don't have the right weather, they don't go," said Bannon. "Boston, they're just digging out right now. Pretty bad out there, but when the weather's disruptive, just don't travel."

Some of today's flights between Jacksonville and Boston, however, are cancelled.

Jacksonville International Airport cancelled the Delta Airlines DL 5184 flight from Boston that was scheduled to arrive at JAX at 11:49 a.m.

Other Boston arrivals from JetBlue Airways and United Airlines were also cancelled.

The JetBlue Airways B6 1410 flight to Boston that was scheduled to depart JAX at 12:19 p.m. was also cancelled.

Mark Sturzel was checking in for a flight this morning, but said although the blizzard has passed, he's happy he's not heading north. He also has some advice for travelers.

"Because of the blizzard, Boston got tanked, but my flight is on time... Get here early and check your flight before you come."

Flight officials want to remind travelers to check their flight status, especially for trips to and from the northeast. Information for today's departures and arrivals is available at www.flyjax.com.
