Brewpub, coalition encouraging younger crowd to vote

Intuition Ale Works, Jax Young Voters Coalition holds event

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A local voting coalition teamed up with a popular Jacksonville brewery to encourage the younger crowd in Duval County to get out and vote.

The Jax Young Voters Coalition and Intuition Ale Works invited the community into their brewpub Tuesday night to meet the candidates for Jacksonville City Council and enjoy a cold one at the Ballots and Brews event.

Food trucks served up the grub, and local artists played music while people got registered to vote.

Meredith O'Malley Johnson, the founder of the Jax Young Voters Coalition, attended the event. She says it's her organization's goal to increase the turnout of voters age 18 to 40 by at least five percent in Election 2015.

"We wanted to have it be more casual so the candidates and the young people could connect in a really informal atmosphere and just talk about the issues affecting Jacksonville," said Johnson.

Johnson also said her organization is trying to simplify the voting process. She's introducing a new website that gives voters an easy way to compare the contenders running for office.

"What that's going to be is a side-by-side comparison of the candidates - an apples to apples comparison," said Johnson. "It can really help you make a decision easily rather than having to go do hours of research."
