5-year-old dies after scooter crash in Arlington

Uncle driving scooter suffers broken back, other injuries

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 5-year-old boy who was a passenger on a scooter died Saturday night after a crash at Acme Street and Hare Avenue in Arlington, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Noah Jarrett was taken to UF Health Jacksonville, where he died.

Noah's grandmother told News4Jax he was riding with his uncle about 7:40 p.m. when the scooter hit the side of a vehicle. Police said the scooter ran a stop sign just before hitting the car.

The uncle suffered a fractured pelvis, a broken lower back, a collapsed lung, three broken ribs, a broken collar bone and internal bleeding.

The adult driving the car was also injured, police said.

"They are running stop signs. They're riding three on a minibike. They are drifting the rear tires around the corners," resident Robert Hinton said. "It was only a matter of time before somebody got killed."

Neighbors said this child's death is only the latest incident in the neighborhood.

Two weeks ago, surveillance video showed an SUV speeding down neighboring Bowlan Street, hitting a minivan and skidding into someone's front lawn.

Surveillance video from last week also recorded a car pulling out from a stop sign and hit a bicyclist, then backing up, then speeding off.

Hinton said he has made a formal request to the Sheriff's Office request for more traffic patrols in the area.

"If they had implemented that, they may have very well stopped what happened yesterday," Hinton said.

Police have not responded to a News4Jax request for comment about additional enforcement in the area.
