2 injured when Florida plane crashes in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. – A Piper Cherokee aircraft flying from Jacksonville to Savannah crashed Friday night on a golf course just short of the runway, injuring the pilot and a passenger.

The plane crashed in the tree line of the Crosswinds Golf Course, just west of a runway of the Savannah/Hilton Head Island International airport.

Emergency officials told WTOC-TV that two people were extracted from the plane and airlifted to a hospital. As of Saturday morning, their names and conditions had not been released.

Savannah Fire, Airport Police and Fire responded to the scene. According to an official, the 165th Airlift Wing of the Georgia Air National Guard responded with three firetrucks and eight personnel. 

Airport operations were initially halted after the crash. One runway has since reopened. 

The plane was with BlueJay Aviation.
