Police identify man killed in Baymeadows shooting

Police searching for shooter, motive in apartment complex shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police have identified the man who was shot and killed at a Baymeadows area apartment complex early Friday morning.

Sergio Cox, 26, was shot and killed and a second man was injured during the shooting, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The shooting was reported around 1 a.m. at the Bentley Green Apartments off Baymeadows Road between Interstate 95 and Southside Boulevard.

There is no word on what might have led to the shooting.

Detectives spent the morning combing for evidence, looking for surveillance video and speaking with
neighbors in the area.

One neighbor told News4Jax that he was watching television when he noticed the police activity right beneath his apartment balcony. The man, who asked not to be identified, started filming cellphone video.

In the video, Cox is seen lying next to a white Cadillac. The second man who was injured in the
shooting is seen leaning up against a tree.

That neighbor told News4Jax that he could hear the conversation between the surviving victim and officers.

"He said this was his brother, that they were related. The guy was visibly upset, as you can see in the video," the neighbor said. "I asked the police officer if the guy wanted some water, which I gave them."

The man was then taken to the hospital. There's no word on the extent of his injuries.

The Cadillac was towed away from the scene with visible evidence markers on it.

Police are asking for help from the public in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.

JSO's crime-mapping tool shows 23 assaults, 18 burglaries, 17 cars stolen and five robberies all within a half-mile radius of the apartments in the last six months.
