30-year-old man dies after rookie officer, partner attempt CPR

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Dontae Alston died Wednesday afternoon after he was shot in the torso despite the efforts of officers to save his life, including a rookie officer on his first day of field training, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said the shooting was reported about 1:45 p.m. on Wright Avenue, just off St. Augustine Road, south of Emerson Street.

Officers found Alston shot inside a home and began CPR. Jacksonville Fire Rescue arrived and took him to UF Health, where he died during surgery, JSO Homicide Sgt. Jay Farhat said. 

Farhat said they believe that one or two people fired shots.

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS. 

According to the JSO crime map, there have been 21 crimes reported within a half-mile of the deadly shooting, including a homicide and six assaults, since Sept. 1. The homicide in early September was determined to be a justifiable homicide, JSO records show.
