FHP gives details of crash that killed motorcyclist

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol has released its report on a crash Wednesday evening that killed a 26-year-old motorcyclist and sent his 17-year-old passenger to the hospital.

According to the report, 64-year-old Ethel Tolbert was driving her minivan south on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway just after 7:30 p.m. when she tried to turn left onto the northbound ramp to Interstate 95. Robert Hayes was riding north in the right lane off MLK Parkway.

Troopers said Tolbert turned her van in Hayes path, forcing him to try and avoid her minivan. Hayes ended up crashing into the right side of the van.

Hayes and his 17-year-old female passenger were taken to UF Health Jacksonville. Hayes later died at the hospital, and the teenage was said to have serious injuries.

The crash and investigation kept all westbound lanes of MLK Parkway for several hours.
