Man dies in motorcycle crash on I-95 near I-295 on Northside

JACKSONVILLE Fla. – A motorcyclist died Sunday evening in a crash at the intersection of I-95 and I-295 on the north end of Jacksonville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Investigators said 28-year-old Joseph Powell was riding south on I-95 about 7 p.m. when he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the concrete barrier.

Powell was thrown into the roadway and troopers said a passing tractor-trailer hit him and dragged the motorcycle to the I-295 southbound entrance ramp, where it ended up in the grass shoulder at the tree line.

The driver of that tractor-trailer fled the scene.

Troopers believe another tractor-trailer might also have hit Powell after he was thrown from the motorcycle. The driver of that semi stopped at the scene and is not facing any charges.

Powell was the fourth motorcyclist killed on northeast Florida roads over the weekend.

Friends started a GoFundMe.com account to raise money for Powell's funeral.

"Joe was an amazing man who always was respectful and went beyond the call as a friend whenever needed without asking for anything back. Well now his friends are asking that we give back to him the only way we can," wrote Adam Stevens.
