Detention deputy arrested for smuggling contraband

Deputy knew inmate prior to incarceration

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Columbia County Detention Deputy was arrested at the county detention facility Saturday when he brought in and delivered contraband to an inmate.

Dillon Moore was arrested at 6:50 am and was booked on one count of delivering contraband inside a detention facility.

The investigation began earlier in the week when it was suspected that an inmate was being supplied tobacco products by an unknown source. As the investigation proceeded, it was discovered that Moore and the inmate were friends prior to the inmate’s incarceration, and that Moore began supplying him with smokeless tobacco as a favor.

After the arrest, per Sheriff’s Office policy, Moore was placed on administrate leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

“Columbia County Sheriff’s Office personnel are held to the highest standard of conduct,” Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter said. “It’s disappointing when something like this occurs; not only is it criminal behavior, but it detracts from the otherwise outstanding work the agency’s men and women do day in and day out.”
